On The Record: Va. elections; Gail Parker candidacy
2008-09-08
If Virginia really is going to be in play in the Presidential election on November 4, thousands of poll workers, electoral board members and voting registrars across the Commonwealth will need to be on their toes. No one wants a replay of what happened in Florida in 2000. The woman in the middle will be overseeing her first Presidential vote. She is Nancy Rodrigues, Secretary of the Virginia State Board of Elections. This Sunday, she and another newcomer to November presidential elections, York County registrar Walt Latham, will be my guests. Gail "For Rail" Parker will be with me as well, to talk about her independent campaign for the U.S. Senate in Virginia. And on My Minute, what else, Sarah Palin, and her potential impact on the Republican ticket.
On the Record: Beach superintendent, Republican convention, Mark Warner
2008-09-01
Mark Warner is taking his oldest daughter to college this weekend, as she starts her freshman year at Brown University. Then he is back on the campaign trail, competing to win a U.S. Senate seat from Virginia. We talk about reaction to his speech at the Democratic Convention Tuesday in Denver. I also chat with two local delegates to the Republican Convention, Pam Brown of Norfolk and Bryan Meals of Portsmouth, and preview a big change in how teachers will teach and students will learn in Virginia Beach, the area's largest school system, with their new superintendent, James Merrill.
On the Record: Red light cameras; HS Gametime
2008-08-22
Mike Gooding fills in for Joel Rubin. He discusses the new red light cameras that Virginia Beach police will soon install at more than two dozen intersections around the city. His guests are Virginia Beach Police Chief Jake Jacocks and Sgt. Ryan Arnold, head of the program. Also Brian Smith of 13 Sports reviews the upcoming high school football season, the Olympics and local gold medalist LaShawn Merritt.
On the Record: Democratic convention, new city managers
2008-08-15
The Democrats have given Mark Warner a golden opportunity for national publicity, awarding him the keynote address slot on August 26 at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. What should he talk about that will endear him to a national audience while not alienating the voters in Virginia where he is running for the U.S. Senate? This Sunday, I'll yak with two convention delegates, Obama supporter Jack Howard and Clinton supporter Vivian Paige about that issue and whether all Democrats are ready to work together now to help Obama win the November election.
You'll also meet two of our newest local city managers, Ken Chandler from Portsmouth and Selena Cuffee-Glenn from Suffolk, both of whom worked for the city of Richmond prior to coming here. Will their past association help spur more regional cooperation?
On the Record: Offshore drilling debate
2008-08-11
Whether or not to lift the current moratorium on offshore drilling off the east coast is becoming one of the most contentious issues of the presidential election. On the Record hosts a spirited debate featuring Virginia Beach State Senator Frank Wagner, who favors lifting the moratorium, and two environmentalists, Hampton University professor Benjamin Cuker and local Sierra Club conservation coordinator Eileen Levandoski. They face off over whether drilling is bad for tourism and the environment while also being good for the economy. It's must see TV.
